316 Insulation – The Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

When applied to the walls, roof, and attic of a new home or pole barn, spray foam insulation creates an air seal that prevents heat transfer between indoors and out. The result is a more comfortable temperature and lower energy bills year-round.

316 Insulation can also provide a barrier against moisture, mold and mildew in unfinished areas of your home. It is highly effective for insulating basements and crawl spaces as well.

Open-cell spray polyurethane foam has tiny air pockets within its cells, creating a barrier against both water and air, making it an excellent insulator. When sprayed on the wall, it expands to fit the space and fills all nooks and crannies to create an airtight thermal envelope. It has a higher R-value of 3.5 to 3.6 per inch than fiberglass insulation. Meritage Homes typically applies two inches of open-cell foam in walls and three inches in roofs to meet energy codes and help homeowners save money on heating and cooling costs.

Medium-density closed-cell spray foam, also known as two-pound foam, offers similar benefits to open-cell spray foam. It is thicker, has a higher R-value of 3.7 to 6.5 per inch, and provides protection against moisture, mold and mildew.

Both open- and closed-cell spray foam must be installed by a professional installer who follows strict safety protocols. The installation process requires the area to be sprayed to be cleared of any existing insulation and to be free of dust, debris and contaminants. The spraying and curing of the insulation produces large amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Because of this, it is recommended that homeowners vacate the home during these processes.
